Okay, Peeps, they’re b-a-a-a-a-a-ck!!

The Playa del Carmen Beach-O-LIMP-XX

Mark II Edition - The Sequel

As I’m sure most of you are aware, last March marked the inaugural edition of this now-famous happening. After the games had become a piece of history, we received a great deal of reaction from many of the participants and observers. In spite of that response (and several death threats) we’ve decided to conduct this event again as part of the Peep Fest festival.

Actually, I’m just kidding. For the most part, the reaction to the games was most enthusiastic. I know Mrs. B and I enjoyed ourselves, and for anyone who took part and didn’t have a good time, I’d suggest they don’t know what fun is. If you’d like some photographic evidence that a lot of people enjoyed the day, a great number of folks have pictures posted in the member’s gallery, or you might try this link to Mikey’s excellent slide show.

Beach O-LIMP-XX 2005 Slide Show

While the feedback we received was generally positive, the games are very much a "work in progress" and we’ve tried to fine tune the competitions this year to reflect some of the concerns and suggestions put forward by last year’s competitors.

For instance, you’ll note we’ve incorporated changes in some of the events to make them more gender-friendly and inclusive. Also the opinion was expressed that while nobody objects to liquid refreshments forming part of several of the events, some Peeps just aren’t physically capable of handling the sheer volume of liquid involved, or the "straight shot" nature of the liquor. We have attempted to come to grips with those concerns by offering some options.

Entry Procedure

For the team events, you may enter either as a team, or as individuals and you will be matched up with other solo entries to form a team. If you feel you would like to put together a team beforehand, and enter several events with that group, you’re welcome to do so. If you want to show up in team uniforms...go for it. At this point, we have not yet determined how much of an entry fee will be required to participate in all the competitions. There was a total charge of $5 US (or 50 pesos) for entry in all of the events of the first games, and while this did not cover all the expenses incurred, it will not be any higher this time, and may even be reduced somewhat if we can manage to have some of the expenditures underwritten.

Note: In any of these events where a relay is required, rather than passing a baton, a sombrero to be worn on the heads of the participants will be transferred from contestant to contestant. In the event the sombrero comes off the competitor’s head at any point, they must start their portion of the event over again.

Non-Athletic Events

The following is a list of the Non-Athletic Events which we anticipate will make up the programme of the Playa del Carmen Beach O-LIMP-XX Mark II. Please be aware, these are not totally finalized. If somebody comes forward with a suggestion for an interesting activity before games day, or there is insufficient interest expressed in a competition at the time it is to be conducted, there may easily be changes made. However, most of these are "old favourites" from the inaugural games, so they will almost certainly be there again.

Pool Noodle Javelin Throw

This is an individual event, and pretty much self explanatory...the name says it all. Strictly for distance, no style points. (Thereby eliminating the possibility of the French judges screwing it up. Yes, we Canucks are still pretty bitter!)

There will be separate male and female competitions.

Frankly, we were astonished at the distances some of the competitors managed to achieve in the last games. The field of play had been delineated in such a manner as to take maximum advantage of the brisk breeze, in hopes of attaining some respectable results. A mistake, as it turns out.

This bunch of cranked-up, overly-competitive, steroid-crazed Non-Athletes were tossing the noodles right out of the O-LIMP-XX Stadium onto the neighbour’s front porch. One particularly impressive effort made it onto the palapa roof of a nearby cottage.

This time, the field will be re-oriented to eliminate some of the trespass issues.

In the last contest, the gold medal went to ThrushJockey, the silver to McKinzie, and the bronze to Dan (Mr. Kathyweb).

We don’t know if these individuals intend to return and defend their titles or not.

Tortilla Discus Throw

Another individual event, and as with The Pool Noodle Javelin, self explanatory. Like the javelin, this event is totally for distance, with no recognition of artistic merit. In short, get it out there any way you can, as far as you can.

There will be separate male and female competitions.

We witnessed a diversity of styles in Games Mark I, and I imagine once again we’ll see a variety of approaches to dealing with the aerodynamic tendencies of a tortilla. This competition was hotly contested last time, with a lot of "in your face" style trash talkin’ going on.

Once again, some remarkable performances were turned in last March, and I suspect we may well see some world records eclipsed at these games.

The last contest turned out to be incredibly close - measurements were required - with James narrowly defeating Dan for the gold medal, and Jollymon claiming the bronze.

Water Balloon Shot Put

Two person teams - Any gender

Throwing a water-filled balloon back and forth between two players, taking a step farther apart after each successful completion. Last team remaining dry wins.

Unfortunately, we made the mistake of taking Canadian balloons with us to Playa for the last games. They proved so indestructible that we eventually had to alter the rules in order to eliminate competitors.

This year, we intend to buy the balloons locally, in hopes that Mexican quality control is less stringent, and the balloons may prove somewhat less durable.

Peeps seemed to approach this event with a high degree of trepidation during the last games and took it WAY too seriously. That’s only water in them balloons, folks, and you’re on the damned beach!

At PdCBO - Mark I, the gold medals in this competition went to James and Johan (A European Ringer), the silver to the distaff team of Grizelda and Mikey’s Donna, and the bronze to the pairing of YWGDon&Deb.

Pass The Orange

Multiple person teams - any gender (But more fun if it’s mixed!) Team size to be determined by number of entries. Ideally, 4 to 6 per team.

A new competition in this year’s games. We’re sure most of you will be familiar with this relay race, especially if you’ve ever seen that classic movie Charade, which featured a scene involving Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, and a rather well-upholstered dowager playing this parlour game.

It involves the first player on the team tucking an orange under their chin. When the race begins, the lead-off player transfers the orange to under the next team member’s chin, without using their hands.

The second player passes the orange to the third in the same manner, and so on.

If the orange is dropped, it goes back to the beginning of the line. Use of the relay sombrero will not be required for this event.

First team to pass the orange to the last player in the line wins. I suspect the dirty old men amongst you Non-Athletes will see some unique possibilities in this competition. It has the potential to be...u-h-h-h..."interesting" if it’s a mixed team that’s fully clothed. With the added feature of the relay likely taking place in beach attire...I believe you can see my point.

Lemon Drop

Actually, it will probably end up being a lime, but who’s ever heard of a "Lime Drop?" Some sort of fruit anyway.

Multiple person teams - any gender (Once again, more fun if it’s mixed, but then...what isn’t?) Team size to be determined by number of entries. Ideally, 5 or 6 per team.

Yet another new competition in this year’s games. A relay race (Yes, sporting the obligatory relay sombrero is mandatory.)

The objective of team members is to deposit an item of fruit (A lemon or lime is most probable, as a watermelon would be problematic, and bananas could lead to some rather awkward situations, and we wouldn’t want to embarrass anyone...would we?) - into a container, after transporting it the length of the racecourse between their knees.

Use of hands is obviously forbidden.

The first team to get a number of game pieces equal to the number of team members into the receptacle, wins the contest.

In other words, if you miss, go to the back of the line, as you may have to try again.

Team/Individual Uniform

And yet another very "Non-Athletic" event.

Open to all participants on an individual or team basis.

For the inaugural games last March, Peeps were advised they were welcome to show up in team or individual outfits/uniforms, if they chose.

Beach O-LIMP-XX medals were awarded based on the outfit that best typified the spirit, intent, essence, and character (or lack of character) of the games.

The recognition of the gold medal went to YWGDon&Deb, with the silver to Team Texas, and our most junior competitor, a young lady by the name of Elsa, claiming the bronze.

Beer Can Bucket Fill

Multiple person teams - any gender. Team size to be determined by number of entries. Ideally, 4 to 6 per team.

Another big crowd favourite from the last O-LIMP-XX. First contestant drinks a can of beer, puts on the sombrero, sprints (there’s that word again!) from the start line into the ocean, fills the empty beer can with water, races (yeah...right!) back to the start line, pours the water into a bucket, passes the beer can and sombrero to the next team member, who repeats the water-carrying portion of the process.

First team to fill their bucket wins. Only the first contestant on each team is required to drink a beer, after which the empty can is passed from team member to team member.

During the last games, this contest generated more body contact amongst the more intense competitors than had been anticipated (can you say "hip check?"), but nobody actually drowned, though I understand some minor contusions resulted.

A gold medal performance was turned in by ThrushJockey, Don (of YWGDon&Deb), McKinzie, and James.

Claiming the silver were Johan (A beach-basking Swede recruited to fill out the team.), Dan, Grizelda, and Michael (Mikey).

Bronze medals went to Charlie (A civilian chum of DavidB’s.), Donny, DavidB, and Tammy.

Tequila Triathlon

Multiple person teams - any gender. Team size to be determined by number of entries. Ideally, 4 to 6 per team.

Perhaps the signature, and most recognizable, event of the Playa del Carmen Beach O-LIMP-XX. You don’t want to miss this one.

Participants put on the sombrero, sprint (or not!), 30 feet down the beach, drink a shot of tequila, or a full can of soda pop, suck on a lime wedge, bend forward and rest their forehead on a support to be provided (like a plastic baseball bat), make three rotations around this support, race (or not!) back to the start line, and pass the sombrero to the next team member.

First team to finish wins.

What’s not to like? Running, drinking, spinning to abuse your equilibrium, and falling down a lot. This was a crowd favourite in the inaugural games.

Gold medals went to the team of James, Tammy (PalmTreeMaya), And Donny.

Silvers to Rob (ThrushJockey), Dan (Mr. Kathyweb), and Grizelda (A local civilian lady who was spending the day on the beach, and was welcomed to come and join in the lunacy.)

The bronze medals went to David (DavidB), Wayne (JollyMon), and McKinzie.

Well, there you have them Peep Fest 2006 participants and O-LIMP-XX fans, the Non-Athletic events of our PdCBO Games. Nothing is cast in stone at this point, and changes may be required because of lack of interest, unavailability of required equipment, etc. We suspect these competitions will likely take three or four hours to complete, depending on participation, which should leave lots of time for pursuing other distractions and socializing.

The games will get underway immediately after the noontime photo opportunity in front of the Playa.Info Beach Cam. This was an enormous success last time as plenty of folks managed screen captures of the Non-Athletes who appeared before the camera. While I would consider that the last games could be defined as a success, we’re sure increased levels of participation, and our past experience, will allow us to make the Playa del Carmen Beach O-LIMP-XX Mark II Edition - The Sequel, even more fun for all, and a truly memorable day.

We hope you’ll be joining us.
